My clients sought a tranquil oasis that would reflect their style and offer family room amenities. To answer their needs, I designed an addition with a fireplace and entertainment center surrounded by nature. For a seamless exterior, we worked within existing materials and proportions of the residence.  For the interior, we infused the bright open space with the warmth and casualness of a mid-century retreat. Sunlight, shadow, stone, and wood echo the textures and colors of a forest clearing. The vaulted ceiling expands the room vertically, bringing a sense of freedom from the usual constraints of everyday life. Windows on all four sides and the skylights above connect the interior space to the outdoors. Walnut-stained wood warms the implacability of the slate stone floor tile while the travertine-tiled fireplace asserts a monolithic presence. On either side of the fireplace, recessed wood bookshelves accentuate a contemplative mood.
